Action for Happiness (www.actionforhappiness.org) targets this 40% to build happier lives and communities. The Dalai Lama is the Patron, and members take action to increase wellbeing so that people are happier in their relationships, work and communities. Their aim is to have more people functioning well and helping others. In September, 2015 the Dalai Lama launched their eight-week evidence based programme, Exploring What Matters.
The course is for people from all backgrounds who would like to contribute to a more positive and caring society. Over eight weekly two-hour sessions participants explore what it takes to build a happier and more meaningful life, and what actions will bring this about.
Catherine Norris – MA Coaching Psychology
“I chose to do the Masters in Positive and Coaching psychology at UCC because it is the ‘only’ University in Ireland offering this masters at the moment. It is a unique qualification that I, the large companies as well as the general public can recognise and trust. I know what this University offers a student. Any student. young or mature, logical or creative.
It’s not the only support and acknowledgement I received. In UCC your lecturers know who you are. In the taught Masters they ‘really’ know. These lecturers teach you to think ‘globally’. ” Does this research apply here? What would you do differently? Come on, think for yourself and innovate”.
Now I’m back. Back to learn the science behind positive psychology, motivation and creativity at Masters level. UCC encourages creativity. UCC ‘does’ creativity. UCC is in the business of creating people who make a difference to society not just people who get a career. I know UCC can be trusted to deliver on its motto “Where Finbarr taught, let Munster learn”. ‘Divergent thinking’ is where it’s at in creative thinking. I am interested in being at the forefront of knowing more about sustaining this type of thinking into the future. I work in a number of fields; education, law, tourism and the arts. It’s applicable to all of them, not just psychology. There is no ‘left to your own devices’ on this Masters. We’re work hard and invest ourselves in shaping the Masters too.
I am a Masters student of positive psychology. I’m studying the ins and outs of the ingredients to living a happy life. We’re bringing that into Cork city through the “Action for Happiness” programme. I can show you how to increase your wellbeing through accredited research. I can help you to help yourself in improving your mindset. Coming to UCC is not just about the Masters, it is all that comes with it.”
Joe Murphy – MA Coaching Psychology
“I chose the Masters course because it is the first course of its kind in Ireland, my friend had previously completed the course and highly recommended it, the course subjects were exactly what I was looking for, and my initial conversations with lecturers were very positive.
Having a real interest in the subject material and being supported by the lecturers to apply and further develop my interests in applying the subject material in a future career has been really helpful. Lecturers made themselves available to discuss any career choices and questions that I had. I feel I have a really relevant up to date Masters, I have been supported to fully develop my passion in the subject, and I feel confident making my transition from student to my new career. The lecturers were very knowledgeable, accommodating and supportive towards our needs throughout the year; they were subject leaders and had a real passion for the subject matter themselves.”
